Profile of Robert B. Goldberg.
O ver the next 50 years, as Earth’s population races toward 9 billion inhabitants, we will need to produce more food than we have produced since the advent of agriculture 10,000 years ago (1). This challenge, warns National Academy of Sciences member Robert Goldberg, is particularly daunting given the finite and shrinking amount of arable land on which food crops can be grown. Increasing the yi...
متن کاملRobert G. Loudon and Raymond L. H. Murphy
Our knowledge of lung sounds is based largely on empirical observation. Laënnec (1) knew that the sounds heard by applying the ear directly to the chest provided useful information, and he was delighted when he found that a device intended to preserve decorum unexpectedly presented better information. With enormous industry, and with access to a large population of pulmonary patients both clini...

for example, did eukaryotic cells have three RNA poly-merases and what were the specific functions of each of these enzymes? Clues to some of these mysteries came later in Bob's graduate work, when he found that At 9AM on a Saturday morning in the Fall of 1985, we made our way to the 15 th floor of Rockefeller University's RNA polymerase I was localized to the nucleolus, while polymerases II an...
متن کاملThe Dyer - Roeder relation in a universe with particle production
We have obtained analytical exact solutions of the Dyer-Roeder equation in a cosmological model where creation of particles occurs at the expenses of the gravitational field. We discussed the influences of in-homogeneities in the path of a light beam on the apparent diameter of astrophysical objects and consider both redshift independent as redshift dependent distributions of the inhomogeneities.
